for assist atm as far as i can tell it will attack the second you target something.. so basically you should not target anything unless you want it to attack. Thats kinda the whole point of assist mode. if you are doing healer just target your self and it will heal everyone.

The start combat setting has a typo that causes it to not work (in main or with addon). I'll be uploading a fix today sometime.

I remember a case where my bard uses all buff cooldowns when I targeted something, but didn't start attacking until I use an attack skill. I still have no idea how I did that (was fluttering about to fix it in mid combat)
